Context

While working at Merkle DACH, I supported Medtronic IHS, a global leader in healthcare technology, in redesigning their digital platform.

The existing website did not adequately support the complex user journeys of key healthcare stakeholders — including doctors, hospital executives and procurement teams.

At the same time, the project had to operate within a highly regulated healthcare environment, where compliance, patient safety and data protection were critical constraints.

The goal was therefore not only a redesign, but the creation of a structured product development approach that combined user-centered design with regulatory requirements.

My Role

UX Stream Lead / Principal Consultant

I was responsible for leading the UX and product discovery stream, coordinating the UX team and acting as the primary interface between client stakeholders, design teams and development partners.

My work focused on translating complex regulatory and business requirements into validated product concepts and user journeys.

Approach

To manage the complexity of the project, we established a Lean and hypothesis-driven development process.

The work followed a structured Build–Measure–Learn cycle combining product discovery, prototyping and iterative delivery.

Key elements included:

  • stakeholder and user research across multiple healthcare roles
  • mapping complex stakeholder journeys within the healthcare ecosystem
  • translating regulatory and medical requirements into intuitive digital flows
  • developing clickable prototypes to validate concepts before implementation
  • establishing a structured MVP roadmap for incremental platform development

The project was delivered in short agile sprints, enabling continuous validation and risk reduction.

Key Contributions

  • Led the UX workstream within a cross-functional program
  • Defined user journeys for doctors, hospital leadership and procurement teams
  • Facilitated innovation workshops and stakeholder alignment sessions
  • Introduced a Lean product development approach in a regulated healthcare environment
  • Built a structured MVP and iteration roadmap for the platform
  • Coordinated UX deliverables across multiple teams and partners
  • Supported onboarding and guidance of additional UX team members

Impact

The project delivered a significantly improved digital experience for Medtronic’s key stakeholders.

Key outcomes included:

  • Clear user journeys across complex healthcare stakeholder groups
  • A structured roadmap enabling incremental platform development
  • Validation of key concepts through prototypes before implementation
  • Reduced risk through iterative testing and hypothesis-driven development
  • Strong client trust, leading to continued collaboration and further platform initiatives
